To rebut rumors, Palin says daughter, 17, pregnant

ST. PAUL (Reuters) - The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

I saw that at Yglesias.' Ezra linked to the New York Times on it now too.

I have no idea what to think of this. It's just too goofy.

One thing though, I think this means that there is something to petty scandal-mongering. If people hadn't started with the soap opera talk, this probably wouldn't have come out!

But then, I have no idea how this will be taken. The only thing I can think it that it's just kind of hilarious and goofy, and makes the republicans seem silly on some level. But I don't know.

Yeah, I don't know. This whole thing just defies belief. And the claim that McCain knew about it ahead of time and didn't see it as a problem??? Give me a break.

Of course, this still leaves open the questions litbrit and every other mother I know have raised about the danger of getting on an airplane, and for a long flight, after your water has broken, especially when you know you have a high-risk pregnancy. But never having been pregnant, I'll let those in the know weigh in on this.
